| Changing markets, global competition, new technology and new opportunities are reshaping the forest sector, both in Canada and worldwide. For a prosperous and sustainable future, the Canadian forest industry has to look beyond its traditional products and markets, and be a leader in the emerging bioeconomy; Canada is well placed to be a cornerstone of this new economy. Through a series of consultations with industry, academia and government, FPInnovations has developed a Transformative Technologies portfolio of five research programs, to generate the knowledge needed to develop new products and processes for a rejuvenated Canadian forest products sector. The five programs are shown below:
- Next Generation Pulps and Papers: creating new value-added pulps and papers
- Energy and Chemicals from Forest Biomass: producing new fuels and chemical intermediates
- Novel Bioproducts: high value products based on nanocrystalline cellulose and other new bio-materials
- Integrated Value Maximization: linking the fibre resource to the product attributes demanded by customers
- Next Generation Building Solutions: creating innovative and sustainable building solutions
