FPInnovations Paprican Launches a New Program to Benchmark the Quality of Bleached Kraft Market Pulps

Paprican and Australia's Commonwealth Scientific & Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) have just signed an agreement by which Paprican becomes the exclusive North American agent for SilviScan Services. SilviScan technology is designed for fast, non-destructive testing of wood.
The agreement, which comes into effect immediately, will see Paprican take responsibility for all marketing, promotion and pricing of SilviScan Services for North American customers. Working closely with CSIRO researchers, Paprican staff will deliver SilviScan data and interpretation to these customers. The SilviScan instrument uses a range of analytical technologies, including optical microscopy, x-ray diffractometry, x-ray densitometry, image analysis, applied mathematics and analysis of large data sets, to give unparalleled insights into wood and fibre properties.
Paul Watson, Paprican is delighted with the agreement. "This forms an integral part of the Paprican-led pan-Canadian EvaluTree initiative to further improve Canada's world-leading expertise in wood and fibre analysis. The unique synergies created through the accompanying research collaboration between CSIRO and Paprican will enable, among other things, the next wave of North American value-added products across the entire forest value chain, reliant upon a very intimate knowledge of a company's fibre basket."
Geoff Downes, CSIRO Forestry and Forest Products, comments; "The instrument allows the rapid analysis of wood samples to determine the optimum and most valuable end use of the wood. It can be used to investigate the effects of variation of wood structure in trees on the properties of paper and timber. This knowledge can then be used for breeding trees designed for future industrial uses, and for the speedy assessment of existing forest for industrial use." Rick Ede, Commercial Director, CSIRO Forestry and Forest Products adds; "value-adding alliances are a core element of CSIRO's strategy. Paprican is highly respected in the North American forest products industry. Together we will be able to offer an excellent service to our growing base of customers and research collaborators in North America."
Paprican, The Pulp and Paper Research Institute of Canada, is a not-for-profit research and educational organization, founded in 1925. It operates research laboratories in Pointe-Claire, QC, and Vancouver,BC, as well as a technology transfer centre in Prince George, BC. Approximately 340 scientists, engineers and support staff work at these locations.
CSIRO is Australia's national research agency. It's activities span agriculture, mining, space science, environmental sciences and forest industries. Established 77 years ago, it operates laboratories at over 60 locations around Australia, with offices in Japan and North America. CSIRO conducts business in over 30 countries around the world, has established over 100 new ventures, and employs over 6,500 science professionals and support staff.
